How to Clean Thin Bamboo Blinds?

by admin on Feb.17, 2010, under Home Decorating

I can see a lot of dust in my set of bamboo blinds, but don’t know how to clean them. The bamboo sticks are very close together. We have these bamboo blinds for sliding glass doors, so I really want to get them clean because the light shows through the doors and makes the dirt more visible.

Answer: Take a soft sponge and warm soapy water, gently wash making sure not leave visible water on the blinds. Most blinds will have an oil finish, or a protective coating – but to be sure want to wash and then squeeze your sponge out so it is almost dry and sponge the blinds again to soak up any drops. This will prevent any harm coming to your blinds and you should not get any unwanted water stains.

If you dust them with a feather duster every week, they won’t get so dirty and will be easy to keep clean. They probably have grime on them as well as dust, so a feather duster won’t work very good. Here’s how to give them a thorough cleaning:
    Step 1:
Fill up a bathtub with hot water and mix in a little oil soap, such as Murphy Oil Soap. Any good quality oil soap will help you get rid of dirt, cobwebs, most stains and eliminate bad odor from the bamboo blinds.

    Step 2:
Immerse the blind in the tub in a bundled form and shuffle the blind a few times to ensure that the soapy water reaches everywhere. Clean one blind at a time.

    Step 3:
Let the blind sit in the tub for a couple of minutes. Then take the blind out of the tub and set it aside.

    Step 4:
Drain the bathtub and rinse it so that the dirt and grime is washed away.

    Step 5:
Repeat the process if the blind still appears dirty. If not, fill up the tub with hot water and rinse the blind repeatedly to remove the soap. Use the shower spray to accelerate this process.

    Step 6:
Do this for all the bamboo blinds in your house.

    Step 7:
Take the blinds to a sunny place, such as a terrace, garden or backyard. Hang them up to air dry for at least for 20 minutes.

    Step 8:
Ensure that the blinds are completely dry before hanging them back on your windows.

Once, that’s done, remember to dust them every week so they stay clean and you don’t have to go through all that again! ☺

I vaccuum the dust off with the hose attachment. Once a year I give them a soak in diluted murphy’s oil soap, & hang over the porch rail to drip dry.

use vinegar water which is 1 small bottle of brown vinegar mixed the vinegar bottle half way with water shake it then apply this to the bamboo with a cloth then let it dry outside if its dry and sunny.
