Depends on your interest. D&D can easily be played like that; if you utilize the second or third edition ruleset. I highly recommend 2nd edition. D&D is great if you are into a fantasy-themed storyline. If you are more inclined to science fiction, Shadowrun or Star Wars RPG are both viable options.

Games you would want to stay away from would be games that are highly dependent on the use of a board or battlemap, such as D&D 4E, Battletech (Mechwarrior) and some others.

My friends and I used to play D&D a couple times a month via Messenger and email.

i suggest shadow run. shadow run is a futuristic fantasy game with magic and technology using a d6 system and pen and paper (no boards). the rules can be purchased for 50$ or you can download them (if you really want i can give you a free pdf of the rulebook via email).
up to 8 players plus a GM can play. since there is no board you can play from different areas (as i once described it, its basically just sitting in a room talking and rolling dice).
