D&D can easily be played like that; if you utilize the second or third edition ruleset. I highly recommend 2nd edition. D&D is great if you are into a fantasy-themed storyline. If you are more inclined to science fiction, Shadowrun or Star Wars RPG are both viable options. Games you would want to stay away from would be games that are highly dependent on the use of a board or battlemap, such as D&D 4E, Battletech (Mechwarrior) and some others.
